Food Safety & Licensing · BC Food Business Guide
A practical guide to food premises permits, food safety plans, sanitation plans and inspections. Use this checklist as a starting point, and verify current requirements with the appropriate authorities.
What to do before you launch
- 1Identify the health authority for your proposed kitchen: Fraser Health in Langley and Island Health in Greater Victoria.
- 2Tell an environmental health officer what foods you will make and how you will sell them. Food service establishments generally require operating permits; other food premises may require approval.
- 3Ask about required documents, such as your menu, food safety plan, sanitation plan, FOODSAFE proof and any relevant floor plans.
- 4Your food safety plan should explain how you control hazards during receiving, cooking, cooling, storage and delivery.
- 5Your sanitation plan should describe cleaning, sanitizing, dishwashing, handwashing and pest control procedures.
- 6Complete any required review or inspection and receive the applicable approval before operating.
