Starting a Food Business · BC Food Business Guide
BC business name registration, legal structures, provincial registration, municipal licensing and tax basics. Use this checklist as a starting point, and verify current requirements with the appropriate authorities.
What to do before you launch
- 1Choose a business structure: sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation. Consider liability and tax advice before deciding.
- 2If using a business name, submit a BC Registries name request. The current name request fee is $30; approval reserves the name for 56 days.
- 3Register or incorporate through BC Registries. The current sole proprietorship or general partnership registration fee is $40, separate from name approval.
- 4Check municipal business licences and zoning rules. Provincial registration does not replace a municipal business licence.
- 5Review CRA business number, GST/HST and payroll requirements, plus WorkSafeBC obligations if hiring.
- 6Contact the relevant health authority before preparing food for sale; registration does not grant food premises approval.
